Templates are pre-structured entries that can be saved and used by yourself and others. In order for others to use the Templates, they must be shared beforehand. All Templates are available at any time via Manage > Templates.


There are two ways to create a Template: either from scratch or from an existing entry.


Tip: If you have saved your protocols as Word documents, you can simply insert them by uploading and extracting these documents into your digital lab notebook. When you upload these Word documents to your ELN, the content of the document (text, tables, images) is transferred automatically into the appropriate entry element. 


To create a Template from scratch, please follow the steps below:

  1. Go to MANAGE > Templates
  2. Click the + ADD button on the top left to Add new Template or Add new folder to organize Templates in it. 
  3. In the pop-up window: 
    1. Give the new Template a name.
    2. Select a folder to save it in. 
    3. Confirm the creation by clicking ADD TEMPLATE
  4. In the second pop-up window, select members or subgroups that this new Template will be shared with. Confirm the share setting by clicking Save
  5. The Template will be created in the designated folder. You can then open and edit it like a normal entry. This will become a reusable layout for later use. 


Tip: 
Data Elements are useful for your Templates as it allows you to specify items or data that are required or important in an experiment.
  • A Labregister Item records your items, chemicals, etc. that have been entered in Labregister. By entering the name or the item ID, a link can be created here. This allows the group to conveniently check the availability of necessary items while reading the protocol.
  • Data Groups allow you to organize your data elements - numerical, descriptive and/or material elements - into various categories or groups.
  • Both Numerical and Descriptive Data Elements allow you to specify items and features, while leaving some fields blank, to record data during the experiment. Physical quantity and Units in Numerical DE are required to specify.
    • A Numerical DE records quantitative data with names, physical quantities, amounts, and units.
    • A Descriptive DE records qualitative data with names and descriptions.
