Advanced Search allows you to find everything effortlessly even in complex project landscapes. On the one hand, you have a list of categories which to Search by; on the other hand, you may combine queries logically, thereby intelligently reducing the multitude of finds to manageable proportions. If there are still too many finds, add more queries; if there are already too few, take some away. This is how you control the volume of finds.

Available categories

Advanced Search helps you look for entries or templates by filtering: Search for an item by …

• Author — … one specific author's name or part of a name.
• Content — … simple or "complex expression" inside the Entry.
• Date: Custom — … name and value of any custom date created.
• Data Group — … name of any data group.
• Descriptive Data Element — … name and value of any descriptive data element.
• Files — … name (and filetype) of any attached file(s).
• Numerical Data Element — … name and value of any numerical data element (e.g. physical unit).
• Labregister Item — … any linked-to Labregister Item.
• Project — … name of Project (where it may be found).>
• Tags — … tag associated to an Entry.
• Title — … (part of a) title of an Entry.

You can enter incomplete information such as merely the last name of the author, or a word that appears in the content, project name, or entry title. To refine your Search results, logic gates (i.e. and, not, or) are available when using multiple filters. 

Search by categories

1. Click the Magnifier icon in the upper right-hand corner and select the Advanced Search option. 
2. To Search by categories, please follow the steps below:
   1. Using the dropdown menu, choose which category you wish to Search from. 
   2. Enter the parameters to be Searched for. 
   3. To refine your Search, click the + icon to add more categories. 
   4. Press Search to display the respective Search results. 
3. Entries and templates can show up as your Search results and will appear below the Search bar. When you click on the Search result, you will be redirected to the corresponding entry in the notebook. 

Search with automatic adaption

Using the Numerical Data Elements drop-down option allows you to look for experimental parameters by combining physical quantities and different mathematical comparison operations. 

1. In the Advanced Search, select via the drop-down menu the Numerical Data Element. 
2. Enter the name of the Data Element. 
3. Via the drop-down menu choose the physical quantity. 
4. From a drop-down menu, you are able to select different mathematical comparison operations. 
5. Enter your numerical amount. 
6. Select the unit via the drop-down menu. 
7. Hit the SEARCH button and choose the entry you are looking for. 
8. Click + to add another Search query. 
9. Click on Collapse to hide the Search bar. 

Apply logic gates

Using the Advanced Search, additional logic gates (AND, OR, NOT) can be applied to Search for both entries or templates. Logic gates can only apply to two or more rows of information.

1. Add another row of information by clicking the + icon to the right end of the existing row.
   
2. Click on the arrow down in the first cell of the new row. To filter your Search results select AND, NOT, or OR. 
3. You can also remove Search criteria by making use of the - button. 
4. Once you’ve filled out and selected all your criteria, click SEARCH.
